An esophageal string test (EST) is a simple, non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to detect acid reflux and other esophageal conditions. During the test, you swallow a thin, weighted string capsule that travels down your esophagus. The capsule collects samples of fluid from your esophageal lining, which are then analyzed in our laboratory to measure acid exposure and identify inflammation or other abnormalities.
This test is particularly useful for patients who may not tolerate traditional endoscopy (a camera-based procedure) or who need additional diagnostic information beyond what standard testing can provide.
The esophageal string test may be recommended if you experience:
Your specialist will assess whether EST is the right diagnostic tool for your specific situation.
The esophageal string test is quick and straightforward. You'll be asked to swallow the small capsule attached to a thin string, which you'll hold gently between your teeth. The capsule travels naturally down your esophagus over the next 15 minutes while you rest comfortably. You may feel mild throat discomfort, similar to swallowing a large pill, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated.
After the collection period, the string is gently withdrawn, and the capsule is removed for laboratory analysis. Results typically become available within a few days, and your specialist will review them with you to discuss findings and next steps.
The esophageal string test itself is diagnostic only — it doesn't treat your condition. However, the information gathered helps your specialist develop a personalized management plan. Depending on your results, treatment may include:
